Our Story

Most of what we buy today is quick, convenient—and forgettable. But the things that stay with us are different. They carry meaning, they last longer, and they make our everyday lives healthier and warmer. That’s what Indian crafts have always done. Brass that ages beautifully with use. Cotton that breathes through the seasons.

And that’s only the beginning. From natural fibers like jute, rattan, seagrass, and cotton shaped into baskets, rugs, and textiles, to intricate arts like Madhubani, Kalamkari, and Rajputana paintings, to sculptural crafts and textiles such as Bidriware, pottery, wood carvings, Zardozi embroidery, Patola sarees, Kutch embroidery, and handwoven silks—India’s traditions aren’t just decorative, they’re ways of living; they’re rituals and solutions that have served humanity for centuries.

Bulky Santa was created to bring that wisdom back into daily life. We curate home décor, gifting, and pooja essentials that are thoughtful, premium, and rooted in heritage. Each collection is designed to feel whole—something you can use and live with, not just admire on a shelf.

Our purpose is simple: to keep Indian handicrafts alive as part of modern living. Not just as memories of the past, but as meaningful choices for today. We work directly with artisans who have been doing this for generations so their skills continue to thrive, while giving you conscious alternatives to mass-made products.

This idea originated with our founder, Swati. Growing up in a Rajasthani family and in the old lanes of Delhi, she was surrounded by traditions that never felt outdated. Her curiosity led her from haats and emporiums to trade fairs all around India, where she discovered both the struggles and the brilliance of artisans. What she realized was that the crafts weren’t the problem—the way they were presented was. They needed to be woven into modern life in ways people could easily embrace.

That’s how this vision came to life: as a home for crafts that are good for you, good for the people who make them, and thoughtful towards the planet we all share.

We’re still learning and improving—but the products themselves have always stayed true: authentic, natural at their core, and designed to enrich your life.

And the name? Bulky Santa = the generous giver of Indian heritage. A “bulky” treasure trove of handcrafted traditions, delivered with joy and abundance like Santa himself. It began with our early work in bulk gifting, and the name stayed, because it still reflects our values of giving, abundance, and thoughtfulness.

That is what makes Bulky Santa:
The Heartbeat of Indian Heritage

Cooking Like Our Ancestors

From dum biryanis simmering for hours to the slow cooking of curries and kheer,
brass handis have long been a part of Indian kitchens.

Their ability to retain heat and cook gently allows flavours to develop naturally,
bringing depth and richness that modern cookware often misses.

Kalai: The Ancient Secret That Makes Brass Better

Kalai is the traditional method of tin-coating brass cookware.

It creates a safe, non-reactive surface for cooking and helps preserve the natural flavour of food.

A thin layer of pure tin is applied inside the handi, making it suitable for everyday cooking when used with moderate heat and oil or ghee.

Every BulkySanta brass handi is freshly tin-coated using traditional methods to ensure safety, authenticity, and long-term usability.

More Than Cookware — It’s Serveware That Shines

Unlike bone china serveware, which uses bone ash in its composition,

brass is a metal traditionally used for both cooking and serving.

The Health in Heritage

“Kansa mein khana, pital mein pakana, aur tambe mein peena.”

An age-old saying rooted in everyday Indian kitchens.
Tin-coated brass cookware supports safe, balanced cooking
and helps preserve the natural taste of food.

FAQs for Brass Handi
  • What is a brass handi used for?

A brass handi is traditionally used for cooking, serving, and storing food. It retains heat well, making it ideal for slow cooking dishes like biryani, dal, curry, or kheer. Many people also use it as a decorative or serving piece during festive occasions or family gatherings.

  • Why does the brass handi have a tin coating inside?

The tin coating (also known as kalai) acts as a protective layer that prevents direct contact between food and brass. This makes the handi safe for cooking and helps maintain the natural taste and aroma of food. It also increases the longevity of the handi.

  • Is it safe to cook in a brass handi?

Yes, cooking in a tin-coated brass handi is completely safe. The tin lining ensures food does not react with the brass metal. However, it’s important to avoid using harsh scrubbers or acidic foods for long durations to preserve the tin coating.

  • How to clean and maintain a brass handi?

Clean your brass handi using mild liquid soap and a soft sponge. Avoid using steel scrubbers or chemical cleaners that can damage the tin coating. To restore shine, occasionally rub with a paste of lemon juice and baking soda or use natural brass polish.

  • Can the brass handi be used on a gas stove?

Yes, you can use a brass handi on a gas stove for low to medium flame cooking. However, avoid overheating when empty, as this can wear off the tin coating faster. Always ensure the handi is properly tinned before using for direct cooking.

  • What makes Bulkysanta’s brass handi special?

Bulkysanta’s brass handis are handcrafted by skilled Indian artisans using high-quality brass and genuine tin coating. Each handi comes with a fitted lid and polished finish—combining durability, beauty, and traditional authenticity.

  • Can I cook all types of food in a brass handi?

Yes, you can cook almost every type of dish in a tin-coated brass handi—from curries and dals to biryanis and sweets. The food-safe tin lining (kalai) prevents brass from reacting with acidic ingredients like tomatoes or tamarind, ensuring safe and healthy cooking every time. It’s ideal for both everyday meals and traditional slow-cooked recipes.

  • Is the tin coating inside the brass handi food-safe?

Absolutely. The tin coating acts as a natural, non-toxic protective layer between the brass and your food. It prevents any metal reaction and preserves the authentic flavor of dishes. Bulkysanta’s brass handis use pure tin coating, the traditional kalai method trusted in Indian households for generations.

  • Does a brass handi consume more gas while cooking?

No, in fact, a brass handi heats up faster and retains heat longer than many modern utensils. The excellent heat conductivity of brass helps in even cooking and efficient use of gas, making it both energy-saving and effective for slow cooking.

  • Why choose a brass handi over stainless steel or aluminum?

Brass offers natural heat retention and durability unmatched by modern metals. When tin-coated, it provides the safety of modern cookware with the traditional benefits of even heating and better taste retention.

  • Can I cook acidic foods like tomato or lemon in this handi?

Yes, you can. The tin coating inside the brass handi prevents any reaction with acidic ingredients, keeping your food safe and tasty. Just make sure the coating is intact before cooking.

  • How long does the tin coating last?

With regular use, the tin coating can last 6–12 months. When the inner surface starts looking dull or worn, it’s time to get it re-tinned (kalai) to maintain food safety and performance.

  • What is the difference between Brass and Copper?

Brass (Pital) is an alloy composed primarily of Copper and Zinc. Copper (Tamba) is a pure elemental metal. Functionally, this difference means Brass is generally stronger and more durable than pure Copper, and it features a distinctive rich golden-yellow color. While Copper is prized for its historical health uses (especially for water), Brass is the preferred metal for our heritage servingware due to its superior strength and lasting golden shine.
